Students:

Study Abroad and Study Away

STUDY ABROAD

MSU is a national leader in study abroad. It sends more students abroad each year than any other public university. More than 200 programs are offered throughout the world.

RCAH advisers can help students find the Study Abroad program that fits their interests and academic needs. Programs are available that meet university writing and integrative studies requirements, count toward the language requirement, contribute to cognate or specialization requirements, or apply to the RCAH major or dual majors.

Programs range in length from two to six weeks to a semester or full academic year, and they are offered every session, including winter and spring break. For a searchable database of programs, as well as information on university scholarships and financial aid that can be applied to overseas study, visit the MSU Study Abroad Office website.

The Residential College in the Arts and Humanities is the primary sponsor of two programs, "Ethics and Development in Mali: Art, Culture, and Education" (Mali, West Africa) and "Ethics in Ecotourism and Sustainable Development" (Costa Rica), although RCAH students are not limited to these.

In addition, RCAH students may participate in Freshman Seminars abroad. This year programs were offered in Ireland, Scotland, New Zealand, and South Africa.

RCAH students can compete for financial assistance grants through the Ruth Dahlberg Smith Fund for Study Abroad and Study Away.

Twice a year the RCAH co-sponsors a Study Abroad fair at the MSU Union Building. Students considering a Study Abroad program can talk with program faculty, academic advisers, and financial aid representatives; chat with students who have already participated; see photos and artifacts from around the world...even get their passport photo taken.

STUDY AWAY

Study Away programs provide an opportunity to learn and earn credit at a number of sites across the United States. In general, programs combine classroom sessions with community engagement activities or experiences in business or nonprofit organizations.

RCAH students may also participate in Freshman Seminars within the United States.  This year, programs were offered in Detroit ("Arts, Creativity, and Economic Development") and Gull Lake, Michigan ("SpartaNature at Kellogg Biological Research Station").
