Students:

Living at RCAH

Welcome home! This is Snyder-Phillips Hall at the heart of the Michigan State University campus, home of the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities.

Rooms

The student rooms in Snyder-Phillips have been completely renovated, restoring some of the original ambiance of these classic residence halls while making important updates. The ceilings have been restored to their original heights. Each room is furnished with attractive furniture, including desks, lofts, and dressers. In addition, the community bathrooms have been completely redesigned to add privacy features such as individual shower stalls, kiosk-style sinks, and lockers for each room.

Dining Hall

"The Gallery," as the dining hall is named, is also new. To provide students with the widest possible range of dining options, it is arranged as an open food court with multiple venues. Each features a different style of cuisine. Ciao! serves up pizza and subs; Latitudes offers a variety of international and ethnic foods. Other venues specialize in salads, desserts, new versions of traditional foods, and grilled items such as grilled tuna or chicken as well as burgers. The style of service is also customer-centered: rather than serving themselves, customers enjoy food prepared to order and plated for them. Check out a sample menu and learn more at the Eat at State website.

Coffee Shop

Located on the first floor next to the dining hall is Aroma Borealis, a coffee shop featuring baked goods, salads, and prepared sandwiches in addition to a full range of coffee beverages.

Art Gallery

On the second floor, the LookOut! Gallery overlooks the dining hall. Designed with flexibility in mind, the gallery can divided and used as three separate spaces or opened up to be used as one larger exhibition space.

Performance Space

Perhaps no space in RCAH is as versatile and exciting as the multipurpose performance room. Featuring upholstered auditorium-style seating for approximately 140 people and theatrical lighting, high-tech digital video equipment, and special acoustical treatments, the room is an intimate setting for recitals, films, theatrical performances, and classes.

Music Practice Rooms

There are three music practice rooms located on the terrace level, giving RCAH students the opportunity to pursue their musical interests in a convenient location. The rooms range in size from a studio designed primarily for one or two musicians to one that can accommodate up to ten musicians. Each room is equipped with a piano, music stands, and music practice chairs.

Art Studio

RCAH has its own art studio located on the terrace level across from the Language and Media Center. This large space is the home for many of the college's creative workshops as well as studio space for visiting artists.

Language and Media Center

The Language and Media Center is located across from the art studio on the terrace level. It includes spaces and equipment designed to assist students in the acquisition of a second language. Both printed and audiovisual materials are readily available, including three plasma-screen televisions on which students can watch foreign-language television programming and videos. The center also features special technology to assist students in the writing and development of multimedia projects.
