Electronic Dreams

In the 1970s, George Liu moved from California to Michigan to practice architecture. He writes that “the sudden change of environment had a profound effect on my spirit. A subtle sense of sadness and longing seems to seep through the bright and cheerful colors of almost all of my paintings. At a same time, there is a deliberate attempt to combine the precision and rationality of mathematics and architecture with the passion and imagination of art. The use of digital technology, a perfect minimalist tool, further accentuates the tension inherent in such a combination. Electronic Dreams has been chosen for this exhibition’s title to encapsulate this union, at once sad and cheerful, precise and dream-like, perhaps a mirror of my inner self.”

George Liu

George Liu was born in Shanghai, China, and immigrated to the U.S. in the 1950s. He received his M.S. in mathematics from Stanford University before he studied architecture. During that time and since then, painting has always been his great interest. He is the author of three books, Architectural Poems, Architectural Art, and Steel + Brick.
