Folk Music Lessons and Community Jam

Small, one-hour, 10-week group lessons offered on guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass or ukulele at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of instruction. There will also be a free jam session led by Dr. Chris Scales, his MSU music students, and volunteers from the community. MSU, LCC, high school students and all community members are welcome.

If students do not have their own, the RCAH can loan instruments for the course of the semester.


Tuesday evenings, January 22 through April 2, 2013.

  • Beginning group lessons run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Intermediate group lessons: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Advanced group lessons: 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The free jam session begins at 7:30 p.m. and continues throughout the evening.

Students are encouraged to join before and/or after their group lessons. Class does not meet on March 5, 2013


Lessons take place in Snyder-Phillips Hall, and music jams take place in the lobby outside of the Sparty's cafe in Snyder Hall. After 6 p.m., parking on campus is free.


  • $124 per semester for a 10-week group lesson including the free jam session.
  • $99 for RCAH students and residents of Snyder-Phillips Hall.
  • Tuesday night jam sessions are free and open to the public.

Financial aid is available to students with need.
