Water Gap Retreat: Appalachian Weekend

September 21, 2012 (All day) - September 24, 2012 (All day)
Location:
Elkins, WV
United States

From September 21 through September 24, 2012, join Professors Chris Scales and Anita Skeen for the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities' Appalachian Weekend at the Water Gap Retreat in Elkins, West Virginia.

The schedule provided below is tentative as of July 17th, 2012, and will be updated throughout the summer.

September 21:
Friday Evening: House concert with Michael and Carrie Kline. They will feature some of Hazel Dickens' songs, songs about coal mining, old songs from this area that they have collected, and some contemporary songs.

September 22:
Saturday Morning: Geology and nature walk with Dr. Jim Van Gundy.

Saturday Afternoon: Michael and Carrie will talk about the art of listening that they use in collecting oral history and recommend strategies for doing research. We will go with them to visit Delllis Rowan's farm in Mabie, WV where he still farms with draft horses. As well as showing us his horses and equipment, he will talk about his early life as a mule driver in local coal mines and what life was like in company towns.

Saturday Evening: Michael and Carrie will teach the group some songs and we hope that Colleen Anderson and Julie Adams (lead vocalist, PRI’s Mountain Stage) will perform and then lead the group in a poetry/song writing exercise.

September 23:
Sunday Morning: TBA.

Sunday Afternoon: We will go to Stan and Sue Jennings annual fall celebration at their home/treenware business/buckwheat farm where we will enjoy a lunch of home-made buckwheat pancakes and fresh squeezed apple cider. We can also help with the pressing and press apples that we will have collected earlier. Bring a jug or two home with you! Musicians from the area will be tuning up in the yard with their instruments and you’ll be invited to play along, sing along, or just listen.

Sunday Evening: Free Time. Michael Kline will be available for guitar instruction and Carrie for working on songs and singing.

Costs for the weekend:
The total cost is approximately $300. This includes transportation, campground fees, and meals. Travelers will go in two vans driven by Professors Skeen and Scales and will leave Snyder-Phillips at 7:30 AM on Friday and return by 6:00 PM on Monday. Fee must be paid by Monday, September 17.

12 slots for students are available. Students will be taken on a first come, first paid basis. Students will sleep at Water Gap Retreat in tents on the bank of Shaver’s Fork (Cheat River). Bring a swimsuit. If you have your own tent and/or sleeping bag, bring them along. Make checks payable to Michael Davis. Give checks to Professors Scales or Skeen and contact them for more information about the trip at skeen@msu.edu and scalesch@msu.edu.

Please let us know of your interest as soon as you can.  This will not commit you to the trip, but will give us an idea of the number of people going. There will be an organizational meeting on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 4:00 for anyone who plans to go or wants more information.  Come to the RCAH Reading Room on the 2nd floor.
