Call for Submissions: 2013 Third Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Advancing Inclusion Through Research Award

To build the body of student-authored work that supports the MSU and Martin Luther King, Jr. ideals of inclusive excellence, we encourage submission of MSU student research papers and creative projects on topics of inclusion, diversity, and marginalized populations.

We are interested in topics that encourage and further MSU’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in regard to race, color, gender, religion, national origin, political persuasion, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, height, weight, veteran status, age, or familial status. Projects may address any of these.

  • First Prize: $500
  • Second Prize: $300
  • Third Prize: $200

Deadline for submissions: December 18, 2012 at 5 p.m.

Application Guidelines

MSU students who are members of James Madison College, Lyman Briggs College, the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, or the Honors College in Fall semester 2012 are eligible to apply.

Submissions must be 20 pages or less; the suggested length is 10-20 pages. All research papers should include appropriate citations and references. Whether you submit a traditional research paper or a creative project, please attach a 2-page (maximum) explanation detailing how the research paper/creative project connects to and advances understanding of inclusivity, diversity, and/or the conditions of marginalized populations. All research and creative works must have been completed in the calendar year 2012. We welcome submissions that have been completed for a class or campus research project, but expect these to be revised and polished. Please include a cover page with your name, PID, and contact information.

Permission Notice: All or parts of winning and non-winning projects may be published on the sponsoring colleges’ websites. Winners are strongly encouraged to submit their presentations for entry to the University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum. Winners are also encouraged to consider submission to ReCUR, the undergraduate research journal.

A committee comprised of faculty, staff, and students from the sponsoring colleges will select the winners of the MLK, Jr. Advancing Inclusion through Research Award. Winners will be announced on or near MLK, Jr. Day, 2013, and a formal presentation will be made at the All-University Excellence in Diversity Awards event. Funds for winning entries will be placed into student accounts shortly thereafter, and are subject to MSU financial aid regulations. Winning projects will be presented and discussed at a special reception for invited guests, family, and friends.
