Shewonda Leger is a doctoral candidate in Rhetoric and Writing at Michigan State University with a concentration in cultural rhetorics. As one of the few Haitian American scholars in rhetoric and writing studies, her identities and cultural traditions frame her research interests and practices. Shewonda researches how diasporic Caribbean women use storytelling practices to make meaning of their lived experiences in both academic and nonacademic spaces. Specifically, she studies how diasporic Haitian women use storytelling as a tool to understand identity (re)construction to (re)define colonial narratives about Haitian women’s cultural identities.
