Join us for free and fun welcome events on Tuesday, August 30–Wednesday, August 31! These are RCAH-specific events, see below for more activities held by MSU!

Tuesday, August 30th

  • Faculty Meet and Greet: 9-9:45 a.m. in C301/303
  • Dean’s Welcome in the Theater: 9:45-10 a.m.
  • RCAH Resource Fair: 10-10:30 a.m.
  • Pronoun Button Making in the LMC/Art Studio: 10:30-11:15 a.m. 
  • Outdoor Activities: 11:15am-12 p.m.

Wednesday, August 31st

  • ROOT Scholars Program dinner: 6-7 p.m.

    ALL DAY SPARTAN SPIRIT AFFILIATE DAY - Wear your favorite Spartan paraphernalia to show your Spartan spirit associated with your organization, program, division, or college etc. Post pictures on the Involve@State Instagram page.

    10:30 AM – 12 PM (EDT) FALL CONVOCATION - Breslin Student Events Center and Live Stream via WKAR - First Year Students/New Transfer Students Fall Convocation will be held at 10:30 AM. You must be seated no later than 10 AM (EDT). Breslin doors will open at 8:30 AM. All new first year and transfer students are REQUIRED to attend this formal ceremony.

    • Fall Convocation is the formal ceremony that marks the beginning of each academic year that welcomes the newest members of the MSU community to our “pioneer land-grant university”. President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., Provost Teresa K. Woodruff, Senior Vice President for Student Life & Engagement Vennie Gore, and Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education & Dean of Undergraduate Studies Mark Largent and representatives from each of the undergraduate degree-granting colleges and other campus dignitaries will extend greetings to you during the event.
    * NO BAGS will be allowed into the Breslin Center. This includes no purses and no backpacks. For a full list of prohibited items, please go to breslincenter.com/nobagpolicy.

    11 AM – 3 PM (EDT) CAREER SERVICES NETWORK DROP-IN DAYS - Career Services in the Student Services Building, 1st floor Room 113 - We welcome you to drop by Career Services during Fall Welcome and meet our team! Learn about what we do and how we can help you navigate all things career. Career advisors will be available with resources to help you find a parttime job, tips to write or polish your resume, and information on career resources related to your interests.

    12:30 – 1 PM (EDT) MIDDAY MEDITATION AND YOGA - Virtual - Recreational Sports and Fitness Services staff will host a mindfulness virtual activity of yoga and meditation via Facebook Live. Check Rec Sports website for link at recsports.msu.edu.

    1 PM (EDT) JMC COLLOQUIUM - Wilson Hall Auditorium - JMC students only. Learn about academic peer support options available to you during your first year at JMC. Please visit the JMC Fall Welcome website to view all JMC scheduled events.

    • LIVE IT @ JMC, Wilson Hall Auditorium LIVE IT! @ JMC Is an interactive workshop designed to introduce first-year students to concepts of diversity and civility.

    1 - 3 PM (EDT) SPARTAN COMPASS KICK-OFF - Akers-Hubbard Courtyard - All first-year students are welcome to attend and learn more about MSU’s first-year experience program. The event will include inflatables and games, photos with Sparty, snacks and swag! Come meet Residence Education team members and Live On Campus Crew, learn about your Xfinity on Campus benefits, and more!

    3:30 PM (EDT) ACADEMIC SCHOLARS PROGRAM CONVOCATION (WELCOMING CEREMONY)  - Alumni Chapel - The Academic Scholars Program (ASP) welcomes its newest members with a special event at the Alumni Chapel. New Academic Scholars will get to meet each other and hear from upper level Academic Scholars and the dean of the Honors College. All Academic Scholars beginning in
    Fall 2022 are REQUIRED to attend. We can’t wait to see you soon!

    4 PM (EDT) RESIDENCE HALL FLOOR MEETINGS are REQUIRED - Exact locations will vary per hall and will be shared by your Resident Assistant (RA) - Residents will have a floor meeting on Monday, August 29 at 4 PM with their Resident Assistant. This meeting, residents will meet their RA, connect with peers, and establish communal expectations as a floor. Participation in this meeting is REQUIRED.

    4 PM (EDT) JMC SCAVENGER HUNT Wilson Hall Auditorium - Meet JMC staff in the Wilson Auditorium as you team up with your new classmates for an MSU themed scavenger hunt. Prizes will be awarded!

    4 - 8 PM (EDT) THE GENDER AND SEXUALITY CAMPUS CENTER LGBTQIA2S+ FALL WELCOME  - Garden behind and in the Student Services Building Room 110 - Come to MSU’s LGBTQIA2S+ Fall Welcome event! The Gender and Sexuality Campus Center, student groups, and campus resources want to welcome you to campus on Monday, August 29, 2022 at 4 PM in the Student Services Garden (behind the building) and Student Services Building 110! Come enjoy yard games, snacks, and meet people while learning about all that the Gender and Sexuality Campus Center and campus has to offer! The resource fair begins at 4 PM, LGBTQIA2S+ Students of Color Welcome begins at 4:30 PM, All New Student Welcome begins at 5:30 PM, and the Graduate Student Welcome begins at 7 PM.

    5 - 9 PM (EDT) 42ND ANNUAL UFEST - MSU Union - Start your year off right and come down the 42nd Annual UFest for fun, games, inflatables, activities, food, giveaways, and more! FREE for students and the MSU Community.

    7 PM (EDT) MEN'S SOCCER V. NOTRE DAME - DeMartin Stadium - All students get in free with ID.

    8 - 10 PM (EDT) “FALL FRESH JAM SESSION” - Hosted on the Impact 89FM | WDBM-FM radio station - Join us for a run down of all of the best and freshest music played on air. Event will feature LOTS of giveaways on air and social media. Check out Impact 89FM | WDBM-FM’s website at impact89fm.org for event information. Jointly hosted by the Office of Spartan Experiences and Impact 89FM | WDBM-FM.

    8 - 11 PM (EDT) MOONLIGHT EXTRAVA-GRAND-ZA - Downtown East Lansing Boardwalk - The Moonlight Extrava-GRAND-za is an event where East Lansing business owners and community members will come together to welcome new MSU students and welcome back returning students. The event will showcase the downtown East Lansing area and all it has to offer on and around Grand River Avenue. During the event, businesses will bring products (no alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs), giveaways, and other entertainment onto the sidewalks to directly engage with students. Additionally, each block of downtown will have a special event happening for students to enjoy, including bounce houses, Zeke the Wonderdog, live music, and more! Students are also able to participate in the ExtravaGavenger Hunt, which encourages students to explore all of downtown East Lansing in order to receive a free event t-shirt and a chance to win AirPods Pro or a 43” Smart TV.

    9 AM – 12 PM (EDT) COLLOQUIUM WITH YOUR COLLEGE - LOCATION VARIES - As a new student you are REQUIRED to participate in this event. “Colloquium with Your College” locations are listed on the Fall Welcome website at fallwelcome.msu.edu and your individualized information is also available on your Individual Personalized Fall Welcome Schedule. During this event new Spartans will meet their college Dean, Faculty, Academic Advisers, upper-class students and other new students in their college. This session is an essential way for you to learn about what it takes to be successful at Michigan State University.

    11 AM – 12:30 PM (EDT) SPEAK ABOUT IT - Wilson Hall Auditorium - JMC students only. Speak About It is a live performance that discusses healthy relationships through directly addressing issues of consent, sexual assault, and bystander intervention. The performance is inclusive of all genders, sexualities, and sexual choices.

    1 PM (EDT) SPARTAN SPIRIT EVENT AT 1855 PLACE - 1855 Place (550 S Harrison Rd, East Lansing, MI) - MSU Athletics will host an exclusive welcome event for MSU students. The Spartan Spirit Event at 1855 Place is free and will run from 1 - 4 PM. Come experience this event filled with fun activities and giveaways. In the 1855 Place south parking lot, games and activities will be set up, including a half-court shot for a free Izzone membership, football toss for football season tickets and hockey shot for Munnsters season tickets. In addition, yard games will be set up, Michigan State student-athletes, spirit squads and Sparty will be available for meet & greet opportunities, and much more. It will also be the first opportunity for students who purchase football season admissions to pick up their student section t-shirt. The shirts will be available to be picked up at the Spartan Spirit Shop inside 1855 Place. Students should have received an email with their digital mobile pass and instructions on how to pick up their shirt. If you have questions regarding the Michigan State Athletics student sections, visit www.msuspartans.com/studentsections or email students@ath.msu.edu. Go Green!

    1 - 3:30 PM (EDT) PATHWAY PROGRAMS WELCOME EVENT - Bessey Hall (EBH) Room 108 -A special welcome event for students participating in the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program, Dow STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics), Detroit M.A.D.E. (Mastering Academics Demonstrating Excellence), and Spartan FLi (First-Generation Leadership and Innovation) programs. We will start out in Bessey at 1:00pm and then walk over to the Auditorium Loop by 1:30pm. (Pathway students will check in at 12:45pm) We will have games, popcorn, cotton candy and prizes for Pathway students. Even if you are not a member of these programs, please come by for popcorn or cotton candy and to learn more about how we can support you! Hosted by Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative (NSSC).

    2 PM (EDT) HONORS COLLEGE (HC) GREEN TEAM MEET-UP ORIENTATION - People’s Park behind Wells Hall - Honors College (HC) Welcome - The Honors College is excited to see our new students at our Welcome and Resource Fair. All activities are required for new first-year Honors College members. Please see your email for your assigned HC Green Team meet-up location for 2 - 3 PM. All first year students will then travel to People’s Park behind Wells Hall for a welcome and resource fair from 3:15 - 4 PM with our dean, HC staff, and student organization leaders.

    4 – 10 PM (EDT) THE “FALL WELCOME SPARTAN SPECTACULAR” - Cherry Lane Field (the field located on the corner of Shaw Lane & Harrison Rd) - You are strongly encouraged to join us for the “Fall Welcome Spartan Spectacular” event showcasing some of our traditional programs with a touch of a few new and spectacular components. SPARTAN SPECTACULAR will kick-off with a FALL WELCOME CULINARY FOOD FAIR. The event will also feature SPARTICIPATION, a student involvement fair, which highlights over 500 student organizations. The SPARTAN SHOWCASE EVENT will be hosted throughout Fall Welcome Spartan Spectacular and will feature demonstrations and announcements by Sparticipation event participants.

    Starting at 7:30 PM in Spartan Stadium we will close out the evening and host the biggest Pep Rally in the “Big Ten”, the SPARTAN SPIRIT event. The Spartan Spirit event will feature greetings by campus VIP’s, numerous athletic coaches, the MSU homecoming court and MSU’s own magnificent MSU Marching Band will be on hand as well, to provide lots of traditional MSU songs that will let you know you are truly at “the school known to all”!

    The Fall Welcome Spartan Spectacular event will close out with a MOVIE in Spartan Stadium.

    • 4 – 8 PM FALL WELCOME CULINARY FOOD FAIR - Cherry Lane Field - Join Culinary Services for a culinary food fair experience from 4 - 8 PM. Additional dining options during the event, as well as dining hall reopening locations and hours, can be found at eatatstate.msu.edu.

    • 4 – 8 PM SPARTICIPATION - Cherry Lane Field - Sponsored by the Office of Spartan Experiences.

    • 4 – 8 PM SPARTAN SHOWCASE - Cherry Lane Field - Sponsored by the Office of Spartan Experiences.

    4 – 7 PM (EDT) GREEK FALL WELCOME (GFW) - Location TBD - Join MSU’s Fraternity and Sorority Life for Greek Fall Welcome. Enjoy free food, games and entertainment with one of the largest, most active communities at Michigan State University. Fraternity and sorority life provides students with an opportunity to find their “home away from home”. The Greek Fall Welcome is hosted by all four governing councils that are represented at MSU including members from the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and the Panhellenic Council (PC). This all-inclusive event brings together all 63 fraternity/sorority chapters at MSU and is the perfect opportunity to learn more about Fraternity and Sorority Life and decide if joining a Greek organization is right for you.

    5 PM (EDT) WHARTON WELCOME CONCERT  - Wharton Center for Performing Arts - Join us on September 1 starting at 5 PM for a FREE outdoor concert with guest artist, Charlie Burg! Charlie is a past Spartan, a Metro-Detroit native, and music can be described as the smoothest of R&B/Indie. In addition, the concert there will be free ice cream and tailgate games (as well as a possible raffle/giveaway). You WON’T want to miss this event!
