RCAH professor Candace Keller named recipient of National Endowment for the Humanities Grant

Professor Candace Keller was named as a recipient of a 2014 National Endowment for the Humanities Grant. She received the award for her work cataloging and digitizing 125,000 prints and negatives from Malian photographers.

About the Project

The project specifically seeks to catalog and digitize the archives of several important Malian photographers: Abdourahmane Sakaly, Malick Sidibé, Sidiki Sidibé, El Hadj Tijani Sitou, and Adama Kouyaté. In recent years, archives of other Malian photographers have been damaged by weather and theft, so this project seeks to protect these artists' work before similar damage occurs. Their preservation is significant to the studying of Malian photography and culture, while also including work from a non-Western context into the canon of 20th century photography.
