Umrao Jaan (1981) is based on the 1899 book Umrao Jaan Ada by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. Considered to be one of the first novels written in Urdu, it is also one of the most significant historical accounts providing insight into the life of an Indian tawa’if (courtesan) and mid-19th century Lucknow. Come see this classic of Hindi/Urdu cinema projected onto the wall of the RCAH LookOut! Art Gallery while surrounded by the exhibition The Figure of the Indian Dancer before it closes. Film is Hindi with English subtitles.
