How are personal and collective histories mapped upon the spaces we travel? Join artist Caroline Monnet and Assistant Curator Georgia Erger for a discussion of Monnet’s exhibition Bridging Distance, comprising the film Transatlantic and accompanying sculptural installation Correspondences.
The exhibition is an immersive video installation that documents the artist’s twenty-two-day voyage by cargo ship across the Atlantic Ocean. Monnet grew up between Quebec and France and positions the Atlantic Ocean as a middle ground, a point of cultural and spiritual contact between her Algonquin and French ancestries. The film and sculptures on view challenge the colonial organization of land, bodies, and time, pointing to the ways in which geographies and languages are simultaneously formed and disrupted in “middle” spaces.
These works immerse viewers in a journey that plumbs the personal, colonial, industrial, and economic relationships between Europe and North America that have shaped Great Lakes’ communities.
This exhibition is on view January 5-July 19, 2021.
