Info Sessions for 2022 RCAH Summer in Costa Rica Announced

RCAH Program on Sustainability in Costa Rica (https://rcah.msu.edu/uniquely-rcah/education-away/costa-rica.html) Director Vincent Delgado will host two info sessions for students that want to learn more about RCAH’s community-engaged research and sustainability program in Costa Rica scheduled for May 9 - August 1, 2022.

The sessions will be held 5-6:30 pm, Wednesday, September 1, 2021, and Thursday, September 2, 2021. Students can attend the sessions in person in Snyder Room C202 or via Zoom (contact Vincent for more information, delgado1@msu.edu). Students will study intensive Spanish (8-9 credits), gain critical skills in community-engaged research (RCAH325 Community Engagement Methods, 4 credits) and learn the latest in community sustainability theory (RCAH203, 4 credits) while living with Costa Rican families at the edge of the world’s largest cloud forest reserve in Monteverde, Costa Rica (https://exploremonteverde.com/). Students will also travel throughout the country to learn directly from community leaders, indigenous territorial organizations, sustainability innovators and many others before being placed in small teams across the country to complete community engaged research projects — many utilizing community arts practices.

Students will return home with conversational fluency in Spanish, publishable research and practical leadership skills in international engagement. Alternative course offerings are possible. At less than $6,000, this program will be among the most affordable semester length programs at MSU when education abroad applications open later in the fall. Also, due to a generous donor, need-based scholarships covering either tuition of program fee are available to RCAH students.

While these info sessions will focus on the summer 2022 program, students are welcome to come, meet Vincent (he is permanently posted in Costa Rica and will be visiting RCAH for these sessions) and learn more about other upcoming programs, including remote courses on community-engaged design, one-week design justice education abroad programs linked with RCAH203, and a spring 2022 Alternative Spartan Break at Nacientes Palmichal (https://www.nacientespalmichal.com/en/).

Can’t make the info sessions? Feel free to contact Vincent Delgado (delgado1@msu.edu) for more information.
